Direct UPI vs Payment Gateway: Which Should Your Online Store Use?
A UPI QR code feels free and a payment gateway feels like a fee — but the real comparison is about reconciliation, trust, and which one actually gets more orders paid.

Most sellers start collecting payments the simplest way possible: a UPI QR code, screenshot the "paid" confirmation, done. It feels free because there's no visible fee. But "free" and "actually working for your store" aren't the same thing.
What direct UPI actually gives you
Direct UPI (a VPA or static QR) is instant to set up and has no gateway charges. It works well at low volume, when you can personally track every payment. The tradeoff shows up as you grow: no automatic order-to-payment matching, no card or "pay later" option, and no protection if a customer claims they paid when they didn't.
What a payment gateway adds
A gateway like Razorpay sits between your store and the bank: it confirms payment automatically, matches it to the exact order, and opens up cards, wallets, and UPI autopay — payment methods a static QR code can't offer. The tradeoff is a small transaction fee, typically 1.8-2.5%.
So which one should you actually use?
The honest answer is both, not either/or:
- Use a gateway as your default checkout so payment confirmation and order matching happen automatically — this is what actually saves you time as volume grows.
- Keep direct UPI as a fallback for customers who prefer scanning a QR, or for markets where gateway fees matter more than convenience.
- Always keep COD alongside both — payment method choice, not just payment method quality, is what gets hesitant buyers to check out.
The real cost of "free" direct UPI isn't the transaction — it's the hour a day you spend manually matching screenshots to orders once you're doing more than a handful a day.
How Selzix handles this
