How to Write Product Descriptions That Sell (Not Just Instagram Captions)

An Instagram caption is written to stop a scroll. A product description has to answer questions and close a sale. Here's the difference, and a formula that works.

If your store's product pages were imported straight from Instagram, chances are your "descriptions" are still captions — a few hashtags, an emoji row, and a price. That worked when the post's job was just to stop a scroll. A product page has a different job: answer the hesitation that's stopping someone from buying right now.

Why captions don't convert as descriptions

A caption assumes context the viewer already has — they saw your Reels, they know your brand voice, they trust you from following along. A stranger landing on a product page from a Google search or an ad has none of that. Hashtags and emojis don't answer "will this fit me" or "how long will delivery take."

A simple formula that works

  • Hook: One line on who this is for or the problem it solves.
  • Benefit before feature: Say what it does for the customer, then the spec that proves it (fabric, size, material, capacity).
  • Specifics: Exact sizing, dimensions, what's included — the details that prevent returns.
  • Social proof, if you have it: "Our most reordered color" beats generic praise.
  • A clear next step: What happens after they click — delivery time, COD availability, return policy.

A quick before and after

Before: "Obsessed 😍🔥 grab yours before they're gone #newdrop #musthave"

After: "A relaxed-fit cotton kurta made for daily wear — soft, breathable, and true to size. Available in 4 colors, ships in 2-3 days, COD available."

The SEO side-benefit

Real descriptions with real words are also what Google actually indexes. A page full of emojis and hashtags has almost nothing for search to match against — one clear paragraph can bring in search traffic a caption never could.

Where to start

You don't need to rewrite everything at once. Start with your 10 best-selling products — they get the most traffic, so they're where a better description pays off fastest.
